Hanacaption, LLC was established by Korea's Hana Media and Japan's Media International Corporation (MICO) to serve Asian immigrants in providing Asian language closed captions for DTV.
MICO, an NHK affiliate, is the exclusive distributor of all NHK programs worldwide.
Hana Media has been an importer/distributor of non-Korean language movies in Korea since the early 1990s. It has handled some 50 titles including Fried Green Tomatoes, The Shawshank Redemption, Run Lola Run, Hanabi, and most of Castle Rock Entertainment movies.
In recent years, Hana Media developed a digital subtitling system in cooperation with Dolby Digital. The system is used in digital captioning for the hearing impaired and foreign language subtitles for 35mm/IMAX films in non-English territories. As a natural extension of what it has been doing, it developed this multi-language closed captioning to serve the non-English speaking population who are, in a sense, hearing impaired due to language comprehension issues.
HanaCaption is the only company that can provide multi language closed captioning, from encoding to decoding. The DSP6500C is the only US Government certified converter box capable of decoding Asian language closed captions and is eligible for the $40 coupon/subsidy.
